Bangladesh and Its Affiliation with SDGs: Progress and Challenges

Bangladesh has emerged as a notable success story in its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite being one of the most densely populated countries in the world with significant economic challenges, Bangladesh has made remarkable strides in aligning national priorities with global sustainability objectives.
Bangladesh's SDG Journey
Bangladesh has seen one of the highest declines in poverty anywhere in the world in the last 15 years, despite scarce funding. Three years ahead of schedule, the country has achieved its goal of reducing the proportion of the population living below the national poverty line (currently 20.5 percent). This achievement instills hope in Bangladesh's ability to meet the SDGs.
The SDGs have been incorporated into the government's 7th Five Year Plan 2016-2020 (7FYP), which represents the government's key sustainable growth goals. Despite the fact that it has been remarkably effective in declining poverty in recent decades, a quarter of the population remains impoverished.
Research Findings on SDG Implementation
According to research conducted by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), an independent research organization, eight of the 17 SDGs are better incorporated into Bangladesh's established national prioritization systems. However, about 20% of the goals are still underrepresented in national priorities.
The 8 SDGs Better Incorporated in Bangladesh
The eight SDGs that have seen better integration into Bangladesh's national systems include:
- SDG 1: No Poverty - Bangladesh has made significant progress in reducing extreme poverty.
- SDG 2: Zero Hunger - Improvements in food security and agricultural productivity have been notable.
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being - Healthcare access has improved, particularly maternal and child health.
- SDG 4: Quality Education - Primary education enrollment has reached near-universal levels.
- SDG 13: Climate Action - Bangladesh has developed comprehensive climate change adaptation strategies.
- SDG 14: Life Below Water - Efforts to protect marine resources have been strengthened.
- SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions - Governance reforms have been implemented to strengthen institutions.
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals - Bangladesh has actively engaged in international partnerships to support SDG implementation.

Challenges and Path Forward
Despite the progress, significant challenges remain in fully implementing all 17 SDGs in Bangladesh. Limited resources, institutional capacity constraints, and the impact of climate change continue to pose obstacles.
Moving forward, stronger partnerships between government, private sector, civil society organizations like Ujjibon, and international development partners will be crucial to accelerate progress across all SDGs.
As Bangladesh continues its development journey, the integration of SDGs into national planning frameworks provides a roadmap for sustainable and inclusive growth. Ujjibon remains committed to supporting this national priority through our work in career development and professional empowerment.
